Implementation
Indicate and briefly describe any actions that have been carried out to implement this Resolution:
ActionDescriptionStatus
Policy influencing/advocacy• The RLI was included in the 2017 SDG report with data for each country updated in the UN SDG indicator database • The RLI and various disaggregations were included in the First Order Draft of the IPBES Global Assessment, with the indicators extrapolated to 2020 to assess progress towards the Aichi Targets. • RLIs, disaggregated to national level, were included in the ‘country profiles’ on the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool, and made available to CBD national focal points, among others On-going
Scientific/technical activities• A Red List Index for Wild Relatives of domesticated species of birds and mammals was calculated and a paper will soon be submitted for publication (McGowan et al in prep) • All bird species were reassessed by BirdLife International for the 206 IUCN Red List (the 7th complete assessment), allowed the RLI to be updated to 2016 for birds • Progress was made towards the 3rd complete assessment for mammals, but its completion has been delayed, again, to 2018 • R code has been developed to calculate national RLIs based on a disaggregation of the global index, with each species weighted by the proportion of its range falling within the country • Funding was secured from the EU for the INSPIRE4Nature project, led by CNRS, which wil include funding for a PhD to work on RLI methodologies. • Fields for capturing RLI data are now included in SIS.On-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
The RLI has been reinstated as a Tier 1 indicator for the SDGs, and was included in the 2017 SDG report. The RLI is well profiled in the IPBES Global Assessment, which will in turn feed into the Global Biodiversity Outlook 5.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
The lack of priority and funding for reassessments is hindering progress in updating the RLI, with the 2nd amphibian assessment still apparently years away, and the mammal reassessment delayed again.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription
Policy influencing/advocacyFurther promotion of the policy uptake of the RLI, including through IPBES, SDGs, GBO5 etc.
Scientific/technical activitiesFurther development of RLI methods and updates to the index.
