ASOC and its member organizations have been advocating for Antarctic Treaty Parties and Member countries of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to adopt and implement networks of terrestrial and marine protected areas in Antarctica.

The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area was designated by CCAMLR in 2016 and came into force in 2017. The MPA is 1.55 million square kilometers in size, 1.12 million square kilometers of which is no-take.

Description
ASOC will continue advocacy at CCAMLR to designate MPAs in East Antarctica, the Weddell Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula. We will also continue to advocate for the expansion of the terrestrial protected areas network at Antarctic Treaty meetings so that the continent's biodiversity can also be preserved.
