Indicate which actions have been carried out to implement this Resolution :
Fundraising
Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
- IUCN-Brazil executed the first phase of the GEF Project Proposal Grant “National Strategy for Conservation of Threatened Species (PROSPECIES)”, which aims to promote initiatives to reduce threats and strengthen conservation status of endangered species in Brazil. IUCN-Brazil executed the first phase of this project focused on the finalization of the full proposal for GEF approval, until July 2017, in coordination with the Ministry of the Environment of Brazil and the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMBio), among other stakeholders. It is expected that IUCN-Brazil will continue the support of this initiative throughout 2018.
- Attempts are underway to ensure the exchange of data between the National Red List process in Brazil and the IUCN Red List. NatureServe has been working together with the coordinators of the Brazilian Red List assessment for snakes and ICMBio to translate the assessments of 145 species and input the information in SIS (from Word documents, which is the format that ICMBio used for the assessments). The transfer of the information was done from Word files to CSV (comma separated values) files and then into SIS using SIS Connect. The assessments of 105 species of snakes have been successfully imported into SIS and Phil Bowles (Coordinator of the IUCN Snake and Lizard Red List Authority) is currently reviewing them to submit them to the IUCN Red List for publication. The next phase will involve doing the same process for the lizards, which will start in April 2018.
- The IUCN SSC Global Tree Specialist Group, together with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) are working with the Brazilian Center for the Conservation of Flora (CNCFlora) to get all the Brazilian tree assessments that have been done imported into SIS via SIS Connect, so that they can be submitted for publication on the IUCN Red List. The aim is to complete this task this year (2018).
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
The main challenges encountered are related to the data exchange between the official endangered species lists of Brazil and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Particularly, the extraction of information from Word files and transfer to SIS via SIS Connect. However, this first batch of species imported will serve as a test, and any inconvenients encountered can be smoothed out in future attempts. Another challenge has been the translation of the assessments from Portuguese to English. Although there are people that can do this translation, the cost can be quite large, considering the number of species involved.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
- Fundraise for translation of the assessments and for staff time to import and review/edit the assessments.
- Improve the extraction of information from Word files and transfer into SIS
