Indicate which actions have been carried out to implement this Resolution :
Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
Recent work undertaken by IUCN and the University of Oxford, in part funded by AFD core funds, sought to clarify the variety of current and future applications for biodiversity indicators used by businesses. A resulting “spectrum of corporate biodiversity indicator applications for business” demonstrates a breadth of more than 8 specific contexts where biodiversity indicators are relevant to businesses: from assessment of risk, dependencies, and impacts (positive and negative); to internal decision-making (e.g., relating to risk management and accounting), and to meet a variety of external reporting requirements (e.g., certification, non-financial disclosure, and regulation) . The report was published in November 2018: Addison, P. F. E., Carbone, G., McCormick, N. (2018) The development and use of biodiversity indicators in business: an overview. Gland, Switzerland: IUCN.
This scoping project, as well as IUCN’s other broad experience working with businesses and NGOs, has revealed, however, one main gap in how current indicators and tools address the various contexts identified. This is a scientifically robust framework for the aggregation of site, product and raw material biodiversity performance indicators to a corporate-level biodiversity performance measure, used for both internal decision-making and external disclosure of non-financial performance (e.g., to meet corporate reporting requirements and to report against the Sustainable Development Goals). If this gap were to be filled, the potential to measure and manage biodiversity by businesses will be greatly enhanced.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
Limited funding available.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
IUCN is therefore working on a project concept that will aim at developing a scientifically robust structured approach for the aggregation of performance indicators from site to corporate level. This framework will help companies decide on which indicators to adopt to help them meet their individual environmental goals and data needs [and provide some guidance on methods and tools to measure them]. In addition, the project will support companies in testing the framework, and creating a dashboard system that will enable the aggregation at corporate level of the biodiversity indicators collected at project level to facilitate data-driven decision-making.
