II. Implementation

Activities carried out to implement this Resolution
Activity
Education/Communication/Raising awareness
Description and results/achievements of activities:
World Sparrow Day was celebrated with school kids to create awareness on the dwindling population of the House Sparrow. Due to concrete buildings there is no space to build the nests in houses, which were formerly tiled. Addition of pollution by vehicles, polluted smoke emanating factories and increase in vehicle population make the sparrow abstain from these places. The heavy use of pesticides for agricultural crops, where birds depend on the crops for food as worms, insects and grains kill the birds or make them impotent, resulting in population decrease. So we have a project to conserve the bird in a two storey vegetable market by fixing wooden nests that has proved a success, where the bird population has registered enormous growth.
Another activity was done in Holy Cross College, Nagercoil to demonstrate how to make sparrow nest boxes. Students took a pledge by signing in a poster that they would conserve the dwindling sparrows.
