Implementation
Indicate and briefly describe any actions that have been carried out to implement this Resolution:
ActionDescriptionStatus
Capacity-buildingZSL is working closely with BFAR, Philippines, to build local capacity in eel management and has developed a number of management plans. ZSL also provided training for BFAR staff.On-going
Convene stakeholders/NetworkingWorkshops were conducted over the year as a follow up to CITES Decision 17.186-17.189 in the Dominican Republic and London. A workshop was also held in relation to CMS and European eel conservation with another meeting planned for 2019 to make further progress in relation to how CMS addresses eel migration issues.On-going
Policy influencing/advocacyIn terms of Policy reports, ZSL have published two major reports as input to CITES and these were discussed in the Animals Committee. Further discussion will be held in the 2019 CoP.Completed
Scientific/technical activitiesIn November 2018 all Anguillid eels were reassessed for the IUCN Red List, the results will be published in 2019. On-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
As reported above, progress is good to date. In the future it would however also be useful to demonstrate progress on-the-ground to improve the conservation status of eel in response to the strong progress in building capacity and awareness. The re-assessment of all species for the IUCN Red List, to be published in 2019, should provide a good first indicator for progress to improve the status of anguilid eels. Where/if progress is shown, it would also be useful to investigate how this has benefited other freshwater species in the system, so demonstrating the value of the eel as a flagship species for wider conservation benefits in freshwater ecosystems.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
The IUCN Secretariat has not been directly involved, ZSL is leading through the SSC AESG. The power of commercial interests is also always a challenge in promoting conservation actions for eels given their high commercial value and the requirement to use wild caught eels in the large scale aquaculture industry.
