Policy influencing/advocacy
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
UVR CSPO, together with other NGOs, participated in the commenting procedure during the formulation of the SUMAVA National Park zonation scheme. Despite the submission of multiple recommendations based on scientific criteria and analysis of the Natura 2000 sites within the National Park area, UVR CSPO’s efforts to bring the National Park zonation in line with the resolution were largely unsuccessful. The National Park administration and the Ministry of the Environment did not update the zonation to bring it in line with the requirement of 30% of the National Park area within the 'natural' zone. The newly approved zonation includes only 27.7% of the National Park area in the zone, and logging will thus remain part of the management regime for the rest of the National Park. In any case, as it was already known, the approved zonation will not be amendable for the next 15 years under the Act (2034 at the earliest). Finally, parts of the core areas are now without game management and forestry.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
The current Ministry of Environment is not willing to present the goals of the National Park internationally. In the meanwhile, there is good communication between the German National Park (Bayerische Wald) and the Sumava National Park. Both National Parks set a joint strategy on harmonised management of this transboundary area.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
UVR CSOP will continue to advocate for the management of National Park Sumava in accordance with IUCN recommendations. In the early future, the management plan will go through a public consultation, which is currently under preparation by the National Park administration.
