Implementation
Indicate which actions have been carried out to implement this Resolution :
Policy influencing/advocacy
Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
There is no result regarding the implementation of the motion at the moment. One of the main obstacles for its effective implementation is that there is still confusion between the definition of ancient forests versus old-growth forests. In this context, Comité français de l'UICN has submitted a new motion for the next IUCN world congress (Marseille, 2020) which specifically target old-growth forests: “Motion 125 - Strengthening the protection of old-growth forests in Europe and facilitating their restoration where possible”. Thus, one specific motion now exists for each of the 2 concepts, which will provide a clear starting point to implement these two concepts in forests management strategies.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
There has been a lack of clarity among members concerning the distribution of responsibilities regarding the implementation and dissemination of the motion. The new operating mode for motion proposal for the 2020 IUCN world congress have shed lights on the governance scheme to adopt for a dynamic implementation.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
There is a need to explain and disseminate the concept of ancientness to foresters, local stakeholders and policy-makers in order to integrate this issue in national and regional forest strategies. This action has to be undertaken in and outside Europe, especially in countries with an important deforestation rate.
Comité français de l'UICN is planning to organize an event at the stand of the IUCN French committee during the next world congress in Marseille in 2020 (conference, round-table debate). The Comité also would like to make an English publication on this issue in collaboration IUCN Europe.
