Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
The motion has inspired widespread consultations and programmes. Vanuatu has led consultations in the UNGA. Tony Oposa and the Normandie Chair for Peace (France) have held meetings with UN Missions, such as the Marshall Islands. They held a major event last spring at the Philippine Mission to the UN in NY, and launched a world-wide young persons’ campaign to call for the submission to the ICJ. The IUCN WCEL has held discussions on the motion at its Steering Committee meetings and is monitoring these developments, and has kept the IUCN Observer Mission to the UN informed. The Center for Environmental Legal Studies has a been involved in all these efforts and has also (with Tony Oposa’s leadership) launched a young professional and law student team to consult with different UN Missions to educate them about the ICJ Advisory Opinion proposal.

(Prior to 2019: In August 2018, WCEL and the Organization of American States hosted a Symposium on “Judiciary and the Environment: Adjudicating our Future”. The event included a panel discussion of recent climate-related jurisprudence and its impact in the Americas and beyond, and the legal implications of climate change including security, intergenerational equity, and the rights of future generations.)

Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
It is hoped that in 2020, progress will be made to move forward in the UN General Assembly.

At the 2nd World Environmental Law Congress, to be hosted by WCEL in Rio de Janeiro in March 2020, WCEL Member Emilie Gaillard will be presenting on "Taking Legal Actions on Behalf of Future Generations: Paths and Prospects" as part of a panel on the legal rights of nature. The panel will also include a discussion by WCEL Member Catherine J. Iorns Magallanes on "Using the Legal Status of Nature To Better Achieve Human Responsibility".

At the IUCN World Conservation Congress, WCEL will lead a forum session titled "The Future of the World Conservation Movement: Transgenerational Approaches to Ethics, Rights, and Responsibilities". The session will explore new and emerging approaches to law, governance and ethics to better respect the legal rights of future generations.
