Given the relevance of forests at a large scale to the Paris Climate Agreement, SFI Staff conducted a preliminary estimate of terrestrial carbon on SFI forests in the United States, and initiated a project in collaboration with partners to develop a more precise methodology to estimate carbon storage and sequestration rates (not including forest products) on managed forests in the U.S. A preliminary carbon assessment for some Canadian areas is currently being modeled using remote sensing data, with plans to expand the analysis to the rest of Canada. Forests certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard now constitute nearly 150 million ha in the United States and Canada.
