II. Implementation

Activities carried out to implement this Resolution
Capacity-building
Describe the results/achievements of the activities
IUCN secretariat has continued the communication of the guidance on mitigating biodiversity impacts associated with wind and solar energy generation. In addition, the IUCN Mediterranean office in 2022 has released guidance on avoiding impacts to wildlife from electricity powerlines. In 2022 we have continued to work with renewable energy companies to provide guidance on best practice towards assessing and mitigating cumulative impacts from renewable energy generation
Challenges/obstacles encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and measures taken
The Resolution calls for the repealing of laws and policy that obstruct energy efficiency and renewable energy use and the removal of fossil fuel subsidies, this issue is the responsibility of state members and so far, (especially with the current war in Ukraine), there seems to be limited appetite for repealing such legislation
Future actions / activities needed for the implementation of this Resolution
There needs to be a focus on communicating good practice in terms of mitigating impacts on biodiversity from renewable energy generation, this includes case studies and lessons learnt from different approaches
Are these actions/activities planned?
Yes
