ActionDescriptionStatus
Scientific/technical activitiesCanada is a globally recognized leader in sustainable forest management. Many of these managed areas can include extensive conservation areas that have undergone rigorous planning, public consultation and are subject to ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Advancing these set asides as potential Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs) would have the benefit of building forest sector engagement towards Canada’s target of achieving 25% (Target 1) terrestrial protection while recognizing the significant effort that the sector (and 3rd party certification standards) have made in conserving biodiversity on working lands in recent decades. SFI’s work includes applying a screening tool on specific tenures to identify potential Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs) on managed forests certified to SFI. SFI is working with a variety of partners and engaging a conservation biologist to support our efforts and our goal is to work collaboratively with interested provincial and territorial governments and forest companies.On-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
To date, SFI has identified nine OECMs on managed forests in Canada and completed detailed analyses on seven of them. Areas were identified based on professional knowledge of the managed landscape by company staff, and year-over-year assurances of conservation is assured through third-party audits as done under SFI certification.
