Implementation
Indicate and briefly describe any actions that have been carried out to implement this Resolution:
ActionDescriptionStatus
Convene stakeholders/Networking- Regular meetings of RLE Steering Committee - Convened symposia at African Protected Area Congress - Convened symposium at International Congress on Conservation BiologyOn-going
Education/Communication/Raising awareness- Extensive coverage of GET in traditional and social media platforms - Ongoing ecosystem news articles published on RLE website - Initiated revision of RLE guidelines - RLE presented at "Meet a Scientist" family event in Sydney, AustraliaOn-going
Fundraising- Development of funding strategy - Meetings with potential donorsOn-going
Policy influencing/advocacy- RLE as ecosystem indicator for the post-2020 CBD monitoring framework - RLE as statutory listing criteria for threatened ecosystems in environmental laws - Analysis of roles of the Red List of Ecosystems in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework - Reviewing and developing approaches to assessing the risk of ecosystem collapse in a changing climate - Initiation of Green Status of Ecosystems Taskforce to improve ecosystem conservation outcomes by measuring the past and potential future conservation impact of ecosystem managementOn-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM TYPOLOGY (GET)
- The GET is being prepared for adoption as a United Nations Classification by the Bureau of the Committee of Experts on International Statistical Classifications (UNCEISC)
- There has been a significant Convene/Networking effort, around the development of World Ecosystems Atlas, led by GEO. IUCN members attended the convening meeint go the Atlas in Geneva in May 2023, and continue to engage in planning. The scope of the Atlas and funding are still in discussion.

RED LIST OF ECOSYSTEMS (RLE)
- Adopted as a headline indicator in GBF may encourage future adaptation at the national or regional level as stated in the resolution
- RLE adopted as statutory listing criteria for ecosystems in Western Australia’s biodiversity legislation
- Paper on roles of the Red List of Ecosystems in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in review
- Paper reviewing progress and impact of RLE in Africa accepted in Conservation Biology
- First RLE for Abu Dhabi completed
- Third national RLE for Norway underway
- Draft revision of RLE guidelines in preparation
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
Ongoing resourcing limitations to red listing activities Waiting to see if the GEO-led "World Ecosystem Atlas" initiative is aligned with IUCN GET (and would significantly contribute to this resolution). Currently CEM Members are very actively contributing to initiative.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription
Other- Improved mapping of Ecosystem Functional Groups and Global Ecosystems within the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology is key for upscaling its use and application - Develop communication material and training for the wide use of the Typology - Complete the development of a Green Standard for Ecosystems - Support national authorities for the joint application of RLE and Natural Capital Accounting
