ActionDescriptionStatus
Convene stakeholders/Networking• In the 2024 financial year, the Center for Behavior & the Environment (BE.Center) has continued to build capacity through learn.rare.org: the BE.Center's virtual learning platform. The platform hosts self-paced content for learners to access at their own time and pace, in addition to supporting materials for attendees of its virtual and in-person trainings. This has included through translating it’s self-paced introductory course into Mandarin. • A new self-paced course focussed on ‘Assessing Behavior Change Solutions’ was launched on learn.rare.org. • Rare’s self-paced content is available for free on Learning For Nature, with the course launching on 1 July 2023. To date, 1993 individuals are enrolled • The BE.Center has continued to offer additional trainings through it’s 3-day BCD offer in both English and Spanish, running this twice per year. • Individual workshops have also been delivered for partners such as UNDP, Panthera, WCS, Maya Forest Trust, The Recycling Partnership and Faith Climate Action. • Rare uploaded 15 new-case studies on behavior.rare.org.On-going
Convene stakeholders/Networking• The BE.Center participated in a number of events targeting different stakeholders and discussing different aspects of behavior-centered solutions. Events ranged from presentations at the UNDP Nature for Life Hub Conference, joining CIMFAUNA, to contributing to the GEF Technical Guidance Document Advisory Panel. • Rare hosted its flagship conference, BE.Hive. This years conference looked at ‘Behavioral Insights to Environmental Impacts’, with over 300 registrants. • At the CBD COP Rare is hosting an event focussed on ‘People-Centered Solutions’. Full details will be provided in the 2025 activity report. • Rare’s behavior.rare.org platform acts as a hub for behavioral science tools, resources, trainings, and webinars. As of 24 October 2024, it has convened 4,258 members. An additional 1000+ members are accessing materials on a separate platform in China, hosted on WeChat.On-going
Education/Communication/Raising awareness• Following on from the CBD COP, Rare is planning to host a follow-on webinar that will be practitioner oriented. The session will explore how people-centered solutions can help deliver the Global Biodiversity Framework. • Rare’s BE.Hour webinars are aimed at gathering practitioners to learn the intricacies of Behavior-Centered Design from Rare staff and external behavioral science champions. They have convened 1,437 attendees in the 2024 financial year.On-going
Field activities• Since October 2023, the Center for Behavior & the Environment at Rare (BE.Center) has continued to partner with environmental NGOs on behavior-centered design projects. Examples of partner organizations include WCS, Panthera, UNDP and WWF China. • In addition to partnering with external organizations, the BE.Center has continued to work with it’s Fish Forever, Lands for Life and Climate Culture program teams.On-going
Fundraising• The BE.Center has submitted a number of concepts to further integrate People-Centered Solutions into large, multi-year projects. In addition, we have continued to partner with external organizations to integrate People-Centered Solutions into existing projects (funded through a multitude of mechanisms).On-going
Scientific/technical activitiesThe BE.Center has published and contributed to a number of articles and reports including: • Levers of Behavior Change: A Guide to the Science and Applications • International Public Opinion on Climate Change • Reducing Food Loss & Waste: A Roadmap for Philanthropy • Changing Community Climate Change Attitudes: Evidence from a Community Exhibit InterventionOn-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
The BE.Center is working with many of the world’s largest conservation organizations to incorporate best practices of behavioral designs in several major projects. While the BE.Center continues to provide direct-to-practitioner training and other services, it has also adopted an influential role as a subgrantee directing behavioral design on large, multi-year programs, helping other organizations promote conservation through behaviour-centered solutions.

The BE.Center has focused its efforts on demonstrating the evidence for behavioral science in the environmental field, building demand for BCD, and increasing the ability of practitioners to implement behaviorally informed solutions.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
From a survey of alumni of our training programs, respondents identified that lack of funding for behaviorally informed approaches and challenges with monitoring and evaluation are the two biggest barriers to applying behavior-centered solutions to their work. Rare has developed and launched an in depth course on Assesing behavioral solutions to address the latter barrier.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription
Capacity-buildingThe BE.Center is developing plans to translate its self-paced learning content to new languages. In addition, the BE.Center will work to further highlight saliency through publishing new case studies.
Convene stakeholders/NetworkingRare will add a community function to behavior.rare.org.
Education/Communication/Raising awarenessThe BE.Center will host at least 5 quarterly BE.Hour webinars over the next year. (this hasn't been determined, I hope it's more, but want to give you something conservative). We have a target to increase the number of users on Behavior.rare.org to over 5,000.
Field activitiesThe BE.Center will work with partners to deliver field activities over the next year to help promote conservation through behaviour-centred solutions. This includes work within Rare’s own programs and through partnership with external organizations.
FundraisingThe BE.Center will continue to partner to embed Behavior-Centered Solutions as a core component of project fundraising asks. We will also undergo efforts to seek supporting funding to host the next BE.Hive conference.
