Description and results/achievements of activities:
Mission Blue continues to actively support the implementation of the IUCN Resolution calling for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. In collaboration with the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC), Mission Blue has worked to build international momentum to prevent the initiation of commercial deep seabed mining activities.
Key activities include:
- Diplomatic Engagement: Mission Blue has engaged with a number of governments, including France and several Pacific Island nations, to encourage support for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. Efforts aim to expand the coalition of countries advocating for precautionary action in line with the IUCN Resolution.
- Political Leadership: Mission Blue supports DSCC efforts to elevate the issue to the highest levels of political leadership. This includes promoting the creation of a high-level champion circle, encouraging figures such as the President of Palau to speak out publicly in favour of a moratorium.
- Indigenous Engagement: Mission Blue has supported the engagement and amplification of Pacific Indigenous voices in this space, helping to elevate the perspectives and leadership of local communities who are on the frontlines of potential deep-sea mining impacts.
- Coalition Support: Mission Blue continues to work closely with the DSCC to amplify calls for a ban or moratorium, aligning with the precautionary principle and ensuring that deep-sea mining does not proceed in the absence of comprehensive scientific understanding and effective governance.
Through these actions, Mission Blue reaffirms its commitment to upholding the principles and objectives of the IUCN Resolution.
