Description
Through the Macaronesia Strategy Monitoring Committee (CSS Macaronesia), efforts are being strengthened to protect marine biodiversity, with a special focus on cetaceans in the Macaronesian region. Recent participation in key meetings with various conservation groups has helped identify common priorities, such as establishing a marine protected area (MPA), and enhancing collaboration with cetacean specialists.
Key actions include organizing a national satellite event as part of the World Species Congress to raise public awareness and secure governmental support for endangered species conservation. Additionally, a rescue network is being developed to respond to cetacean strandings, along with a traveling educational exhibition across the Canary Islands aimed at educating and inspiring local communities, particularly youth, about the importance of marine conservation.
Looking ahead, the focus is on strengthening partnerships throughout Macaronesia and actively contributing to the development of marine protection policies, with special attention to areas with high cetacean presence and ecological significance. This integrated approach combines scientific research, education, and community collaboration to ensure effective and sustainable conservation efforts.
