II. Implementation
Activities carried out to implement this Resolution
Convene stakeholders/Networking
Education/Communication/Raising awareness
Field activities
Policy influencing/advocacy
Describe the results/achievements of the activities
- Continued advocacy with parliamentarians and other stakeholders in the fight against wildlife trafficking.
- Additionally, educational activities and awareness campaigns are conducted to foster community involvement in preventing wildlife crime.
- Doğa Derneği has been actively addressing wildlife crime as an organised threat to biodiversity in Türkiye. This includes illegal hunting, trafficking, and poisoning of wildlife, with a focus on high-risk areas such as the Gediz Delta, Bolkar Mountains, Tuz Gölü, and İstanbul’s Northern Forests. Despite the national and international conservation status of these areas, illegal hunting continues to target vulnerable species. To combat this, the organisation has implemented proactive measures, including the installation of live camera systems, regular field surveys, and the identification and dismantling of poachers' hideouts. Collaborating with local authorities such as the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Nature Conservation teams, these actions have contributed significantly to reducing wildlife crimes.
- The actions taken have led to a reduction in illegal hunting activities in the targeted areas. The installation of live camera systems has allowed for real-time monitoring, providing evidence that has been crucial for legal actions against wildlife criminals. Regular field surveys have not only detected illegal activities but have also helped in the implementation of targeted interventions, such as dismantling poachers' shelters in collaboration with local authorities. Awareness campaigns have successfully engaged local communities in conservation efforts, leading to increased awareness in reporting of suspicious activities.
- The 21st Türkiye Bird Conference, organised in collaboration with the Gazi University, focused on the theme "Wildlife Crimes and Birds." This year’s conference brought together 30 academics and conservation experts from across Türkiye to share their research and experiences on topics ranging from wildlife crime prevention and legislation to the use of artificial intelligence in nature conservation. The event featured a wide range of discussions, including the archaeological findings related to birds, the role of technology in conservation, and the ongoing threats to bird populations. Participants engaged in a birdwatching walk at Mogan Lake, where they assessed the current state, ecology, and threats faced by the lake's ecosystem.
- Additionally, educational activities and awareness campaigns are conducted to foster community involvement in preventing wildlife crime.
