Raising awareness
Two technical sessions: IUCN organized two technical sessions as part of the first General Assembly of the DesirMED project, held in Valencia, Spain, from 25 to 27 February 2025. The first session focused on the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and the IUCN online Self-Assessment Tool, offering participants practical guidance on evaluating the quality and effectiveness of NbS initiatives. The second session was dedicated to real-world case studies, where the IUCN team showcased four successful NbS projects that align with the IUCN Global Standard. These included Network Grazing (Pastoreo en Red), promoted by Redeia Red Eléctrica in Spain; REPRISE, an ecosystem restoration initiative for risk prevention and ecosystem services in New Caledonia, presented by the IUCN French Committee; the sustainable restoration of coastal dunes for climate adaptation in Catalonia, Spain, developed under the EU Horizon 2020 IMPETUS project; and integrated water resource management through NbS in Rwanda. These sessions were jointly organized by the IUCN Med team and the global IUCN NbS team. Over 60 people attended.
1 technical session: IUCN provided a session on NbS Standard as a tool to inform recommendations for scaling up restoration interventions at REST-COAST General Assembly. The project’s consortium composed by 38 partners participated. The project’s consortium composed by 38 participated in the session. This project is funded by EU Horizon 2020.
1 Webinar: “Nature-Based Solutions for Resilient Cities”, organized by Green Growth Generation as part of the Collaborative Cities webinar series as part of the EU-funded FARClimate project, will bring together leading experts in urban sustainability (9/04/2025). Presentation of IUCN Med on the NbS standards and some examples (30 participants)
Capacity building
1 training workshop: As part of the NaTour4CChange project, IUCN Med delivered a training session for project partners and representatives from pilot destinations on the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions (NbS). The session included presentations of a wide range of case studies to inspire and guide participants in designing, implementing, or strengthening NbS actions within the project framework. Over 30 people participated on 8-11 April 2025. NaTour4CChange, funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme, builds on successful experiences from the Mediterranean and beyond to test innovative solutions aimed at increasing the resilience of coastal tourist destinations in the region. The pilot cases will be implemented in 6 places: Island Dugi Otok (HR); Cabo de Gata (ES); Cap Ferrat MPA (FR); Hutovo Blato Nature Park (BA); Kifousi Island & Zakros Island (GR – Crete); Villasimius MPA (IT – Sardinia).
Over 120 people were informed about the NbS standard with solid examples in the Mediterranean
Over 30 people from regions working on the tourism sector received training on NbS concept and standard.

Challenges/obstacles encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and measures taken
The misuse of the term NbS persists across sectors such as academy, scientists (e.g. civil engineering), urban planners, and tourism.
Significant efforts are needed in the field to test the effectiveness of project classified as NbS in the Mediterranean region.
Additional efforts are required from both the public and private sectors to incorporate NbS projects in addressing the triple crisis (climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss) in the Med.
There is a good opportunity to apply the NbS Standard to restauration projects in the comings years.
There is a significant opportunity to apply the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions in restoration projects, as it provides a structured approach to ensure measurable impact, resilience, and long-term sustainability.

Future actions / activities needed for the implementation of this Resolution
Raising awareness
2 webinars: “Nature-Based Solutions for Soil Health" organized by IUCN Med as part of the NBSOIL project. These one-hour webinars provided a complete overview of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), the IUCN Standard for NbS and the IUCN online Self-Assessment Tool.
Scientific/technical activities
Finalise NbS Manual in the upcoming weeks based on feedback gathered from the NbS training, to be shared with NaTour4CChange project partners and destinations for feedback before final revision (end of May 2025).
Workshops on NbS for the project Medconecta.
IUCN is planning to deliver technical sessions with REST-COAST pilot sites to run the NbS Standard on certain restoration activities in coastal areas.
Field work:
Implementation of small projects to mainstream NbS in several countries in the Mediterranean sub-granted by the project RESCOM.
