TAPAS has made significant contributions to advancing sustainable tourism and biodiversity conservation. A key milestone was TAPAS's advocacy for the adoption of WCC 2020 Resolution 130, which underscores the critical role of sustainable tourism in biodiversity conservation and strengthening community resilience.
TAPAS has also played a pivotal role in supporting the implementation of the Nature Positive Travel & Tourism (NPTT) framework, in collaboration with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), and the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (SHA). This support focuses on bringing these organizations to COP 16 in Cali, providing them with a platform to share insights and foster dialogue. TAPAS aims to help establish sound metrics and promote inspiring case studies that enhance the initiative’s application. This ongoing effort is expanding opportunities for greater IUCN engagement, advisory input, and strategic contributions to the initiative. TAPAS further facilitated a meeting between NPTT and the IUCN Secretariat during the event, fostering accountability for mitigating tourism’s negative impacts.
TAPAS actively contributed to eight major events on sustainable tourism, organizing one, presenting at three, supporting three, and participating in a workshop during COP. The group also engaged in bilateral dialogues with at least 11 Parties, focusing on incorporating Nature Positive Tourism into national strategies for implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
Additionally, TAPAS represented IUCN at the 19th Meeting of the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTS)of UN Tourism, held in Costa Rica.
