WCPA convened a technical workshop in Nairobi on 24 July 2026 to explore interpretation of sustainable use within area-based conservation under the Global Biodiversity Framework. The workshop examined sustainable use across protected areas, OECMs, Indigenous and Traditional Territories (ITTs), species management and ecosystems, supported by technical background papers and discussion documents.

WCPA initiated a participatory consultation process on sustainable use within area-based conservation. The process brought together WCPA experts, Indigenous Peoples and Local Community representatives and conservation organisations, and includes workshop discussions, planned virtual consultations and development of a draft WCPA report for CBD COP17.
