Education/Communication/Raising awareness
In 2021, we provided a Ukrainian translation of iNaturalist and integrated it with GBIF. Since then, participation has grown from 4,400 to 16,200 users, while the number of observations has increased from 181,000 to 2.356 million.

Capacity building
Since 2021, annual BioBlitzes have been held on Ukraine’s Independence Day, along with nationwide BioBlitzes in 2025 and 2026. These events, the Ukrainian translation of iNaturalist, and Ukraine’s participation in the City Nature Challenge have been key factors in engaging citizens in nature observation. We have also conducted several webinar series and field training sessions on using iNaturalist.

Capacity building
We supported Ukraine’s accession to GBIF as a member and facilitated the engagement of 32 Ukrainian data publishers, including research institutions, protected area authorities and NGOs. Between 2020 and 2026, Ukrainian publishers contributed 664 datasets covering 97 countries, comprising 2.867 million records. We also provide ongoing support and training to data publishers on data preparation, standardisation and publication.

Field activities
UNCG is the leading Ukrainian GBIF data publisher, with 1,056,487 biodiversity records across 352 published datasets. A significant share of these data safeguards biodiversity information at risk of being lost due to the war, including herbarium specimens, scientific collections, rare publications and data held by researchers displaced from occupied territories. This work is ongoing, with an additional 300,000 records expected in 2026-2027.

Policy influencing/advocacy
We developed the biodiversity-viewer, a user-friendly tool enabling rapid biodiversity assessments of specific areas based on GBIF data. Within one minute, it generates species lists based on Ukraine’s national and international conservation lists, including the IUCN Red List, with links to individual GBIF records. The tool was presented jointly with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which recommends it as a national tool for preliminary project screening and research planning.
