Policy influencing/advocacy
We advocated for and helped establish a legal mechanism for creating protection zones around populations of rare species. The mechanism is analogous to IUCN Protected Area Management Category III, providing site-based protection for specific natural features and biodiversity. Since 2023, 86 protection zones covering 3,514 ha have been established. This strengthens Ukraine’s network of protected and conserved areas and provides a scalable model for area-based conservation.
Completed
Scientific/technical activities
We engage biologists and conservation specialists from across Ukraine (approximately 65 UNCG members and up to 30 regional activists) in designing protected areas. Between 2021 and 2025, we submitted 49 proposals for protected areas designated at the regional and local levels, covering more than 22,834 ha.
