The work around this Resolution has been minimal so far. Partnerships need to be established, capacities need to be built internally and funds need to be raised. In terms of awareness raising, a well-attended webinar jointly delivered with UNECE has promoted our Resolution and the work that IUCN intends to carry out in this field.

Inclusion of Res 102 in the IUCN Policy Brief on the UN High-Level Political Forum 2026, and in particular the review of SDG 11 (Sustainable Communities). The mention called for the protection of urban and peri-urban forests, the establishment of green spaces as well as coalitions and alliances with local government structures and authorities to ensure that biodiversity considerations are mainstreamed into urban planning and decision-making.

Contacts have been established with UNECE and the FAO Forestry Team, both working on urban forests and trees. Both partners have expressed their willingness to partner with IUCN and develop tools and methodologies to guide the creation and restoration of urban and peri-urban forests. Ongoing efforts are being made in terms of scoping fundraising opportunities.

Coordination issues

So far, it has been challenging to coordinate with the sponsors of this Resolution, as well as other IUCN Members and Commissions working on this topic. A first conversation was held with the IUCN Forest and Grassland Team, to scope potential synergies. |
