This resolution 8.133 present several aspects with regards to the International MPA Congresses series, to strengthen IUCN role and implication in the governance of IMPAC series in general, and specifically in supporting the host country for the successful organisation of an international congress that help advance MPAs agenda to meet global goals (e.g. KM GBF), promote best practices including in terms of effective and equitable management of MPAs, share lessons learnt and maximise the impact range of the congress' outcomes, through IUCN Union and networks.
At the time of writing this progress report, IUCN Secretariat and WCPA have been providing some support to the host country of the next IMPAC (Senegal for IMPAC6, to take place in March 2027), but probably not at the level one can have expected. There is still time for a strong engagement and institutional support, to make IMPAC6 a success, as the first IMPAC organised in Africa and the first IMPAC organised since the adoption of Resolution 8.133.

Coordination issues

IMPAC6 organization is on track and a huge challenge for Senegal. Lack of capacities and time of WCPA marine make its challenging but different ISC members, IUCN West Africa and WCPA members and Senegal government have made significant progress towards the organization of IMPAC6 in 2027

Insufficient / lack of resources

Lack of capacities and time of IUCN Secretariat (HQ / Ocean Team and in general) limits the potential support that IUCN could actually provide to Senegal for a successful organisation of IMPAC6, as this resolution calls for.
