Relevant operative para(s) of Res/Rec Activities Overview Description Status
2a
Field activities
“Enhancing climate resilience of Biodiversity Hotspots in Jordan" project, implemented by IUCN ROWA in partnership with Global Affairs Canada, provides support to women’s involvement in native-seedling production and land restoration through the Petra and Shoubak nurseries, connecting conservation with employment and livelihood opportunities.
On-going
2b
Policy influencing/advocacy
ROWA in partnership with UNEP and GCF, through JILMI’s Gender Action Plan provides a framework for integrating gender equality and social inclusion into landscape and water management, with emphasis on national policies, women’s meaningful participation in decision-making and equitable access to adaptation resources and benefits.
On-going

Convene stakeholders/Networking
Through Al-Murunah+, ROWA provides technical guidance and oversight to women’s rights organisations on milestone deliverables; regular coordination; review against donor and IUCN standards; documentation of lessons; and advisory support on women’s economic empowerment interventions.
Completed
2d
Scientific/technical activities
Cross-programme GESI technical support at ROWA; gender review of proposals, ToRs and reporting; preparation of a donor and climate-fund gender-policy requirements datasheet for proposal development; and gender capacity-building and awareness activities
On-going
2e
Scientific/technical activities
ROWA provides gender-responsiveness analysis within METT, site-level assessment, Gender Action Plan progress tracking, and reporting on women and youth in climate decision-making. Al-Murunah+: quarterly gender reporting and MEL sheets. Additional work includes integrating gender considerations into Green List and protected-area management-effectiveness tools.
On-going

Education/Communication/Raising awareness
ROWA supported the translation and publishing of Gender-responsive restoration guidelines (Arabic): an Arabic edition of IUCN’s guidelines on gender in the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), published on the IUCN Library. The guidelines help make restoration assessment, forest landscape restoration and land-use planning gender-responsive. They are now available to Arabic-speaking practitioners across the region.
Completed
4b
Scientific/technical activities
Through "Delivering a Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Programme for Southern Iraq – Basra Marshes" project, ROWA in partnership with SIDA contributed to women’s leadership and climate resilience through providing technical and capacity-building support to women’s groups and networks in vulnerable areas, where they disseminated knowledge to their communities on gender and climate-resilience capacity building.
Completed
1c
Capacity building
ROWA Provided technical guidance and capacity strengthening to partners and local communities, including in highly conservative contexts such as Ma’an (Jordan) and Basra (Iraq), ensuring context-sensitive and effective implementation of inclusive interventions.
Completed
3a
Scientific/technical activities
ROWA’s portfolio provides regional examples of women’s participation, gender-responsive conservation planning, partner capacity strengthening and gender MEL that could feed into IUCN’s consolidated reporting.
On-going

Convene stakeholders/Networking
Through the “Siltation Reduction in The King Talal Dam Watershed For Enhancing Water Security” project, ROWA in partnership with Netherlands adopt a gender-responsive and socially inclusive approach to promote equitable participation, ensure that diverse knowledge and perspectives inform implementation, and support balanced benefit-sharing across stakeholder groups. Particular attention will be given to how watershed degradation, land management practices, and climate impacts that affect women and men differently, as well as to the roles of women and marginalized groups as knowledge holders and contributors to sustainable resource management.

Education/Communication/Raising awareness
Through the TAZIZ project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, IUCN ROWA produced the “Highly Environmental!” podcast to share local insights and practical experiences from Shoubak and Petra on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation, including initiatives empowering women and youth to participate in environmental protection.

Challenges / lessons learned
Challenges / lessons learned Description
Insufficient / lack of resources

Limited sustained funding and technical support for women’s groups and community-led initiatives, including support beyond project completion.

Coordination issues

Limited community engagement with local organisations and governmental entities to reach women and vulnerable groups consistently

Lack of awareness / engagement

Social norms, unpaid care responsibilities and practical barriers can limit women’s participation in consultations, training and natural-resource decision-making.

Monitoring and accountability issues

Limited availability of sex-disaggregated baseline data and longer-term evidence on women’s access to resources, influence in decision-making and benefits from conservation interventions.

Insufficient / lack of resources

Differences in community needs and vulnerabilities require locally tailored approaches, particularly for rural women and groups facing intersecting barriers.
