This Summary is an expanded version of the Executive Summary of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Good Practice Guidelines on Protected and Conserved Areas Series volume on Recognising territories and areas conserved by Indigenous peoples and local communities (ICCAs) overlapped by protected areas.
It provides an overview of the IUCN WCPA good practice guidance on recognising and respecting ICCAs–territories of life, and particularly those which are overlapped by protected areas. It also provides guidance on alternatives to creating overlaps or undermining custodians’ governance, management and use of their ICCAs–territories of life. This guidance also largely applies to recognising and respecting ICCAs–territories of life which are overlapped by ‘other effective area-based conservation measures’ (OECMs) that are not themselves governed by IPs or LCs.
The Summary provides overviews of the Guidelines volume’s key messages, guiding principles, key approaches or pathways for achieving recognition and respect for overlapped ICCAs–territories of life and key good practices. It highlights good practices with illustrations of outstanding examples from around the world.
