It was felt that a closer examination of the biodiversity management undertaken by RWE at the Hambach mining site during the past 35 years and the methods of the company's stakehodler engagement processes were needed. This examination offers IUCN the best opportunity to understand RWE's past approaches to biodiversity and for RWE to learn about today's needs for the integrated biodiversity management approaches advocated by IUCN.

This document is a proposal to Holcim Ltd. to establish a Biodiversity Management System (BMS) for its worldwide operations and to implement it in a consistent and professional manner, by creating the necessary instruments and making appropriate provisions to integrate biodiversity considerations into policy, strategic and operational processes. The principal purpose of the BMS is to include biodiversity systematically in all planning and operational processes and amend relevant existing guidelines accordingly.
