Ce document a pour objectif de définir un cadre permettant aux compagnies forestières adhérant à la certification du Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) de catalyser la préservation des grands singes africains. Nous présentons des lignes directrices spécifiques et des considéra-tions pratiques de collaboration entre les responsables de l’exploitation forestière et de la conservation afin de préserver la vie sauvage.

The objective of this document is to outline a framework within which logging companies adhering to Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certification can be the catalyst needed to ensure the long-term preservation of African great apes. Specific guidelines and practical considerations are provided as to how and why forestry and conservation practitioners should col-laborate in maintaining wildlife.

Les chances de conserver ces grands singes en danger seront considérablement améliorées si les compagnies forestières sont prêtes à apporter quelques aménagements à leur politique de gestion des concessions forestières. Les présentes lignes directrices contiennent des recommandations précises pour réduire l'impact de l'exploitation forestière commerciale sur les grands singes sauvages, beaucoup de ces recommandations pouvant être appliquées dans un cadre d'exploitation durable, à impact réduit et avec peu, voire pas, de frais additionnels.

The conservation outlook of these endangered apes will improve significantly if forestry companies are prepared to make a few changes to management policies in logging concessions. These guidelines outline specific recommendations for reducing the impact of commercial logging on wild apes, many of which can be implemented within the framework of sustainable, reduced-impact logging at little or no additional cost. Advantages will also accrue for logging companies which rapidly implement these measures, allowing them to be recognized as 'ape-friendly' timber producers.
