The 22 species of Megapodes or "thermometer-birds" are found in Australia, New Guinea, eastern Indonesia, the Philippines and some Pacific islands. With changing traditions and demographic patterns, and habitat loss, uncontrolled harvesting has reduced some populations to a point where sustainable use has become untenable.
More than 1,000 species of molluscs are threatened by habitat destruction, over-collection, or predation by alien species. The nine papers and five abstracts in this volume summarise the current status of molluscan diversity.
Intended to increase awareness of pinnipeds and their conservation needs. It includes an overview of the status of all pinniped species, followed by recommended actions. It is an important contribution to the further implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Marine Mammals, initiated in 1985 by FAO/IUCN/IWC/UNEP.
