Solutions in focus : transboundary protected area solutions

PANORAMA is a partnership initiative to facilitate learning from success in conservation. It promotes examples of inspiring solutions that showcase how nature conservation can benefit society. PANORAMA enables the wider application of such solutions through cross-sectoral global learning and exchange. Through a modular case study format, solutions are dissected into their replicable “building blocks”. This booklet is the first in a series of compilations assembling PANORAMA solution case studies on a defined topic.

National blue carbon policy assessment framework

The value and role of mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrasses for climate change mitigation was established back in 2009 by reports by IUCN and UNEP to focus attention on addressing a critical gap in national carbon accounting and management. Despite the acknowledgement of the importance of these ecosystems in stemming climate change, many countries have yet to prepare for and implement targeted climate and carbon policies for coastal carbon ecosystems alongside other coastal priorities, challenges and demands. This National Blue Carbon Policy Assessment Framework is helping to do just that.

A rapid assessment of live coral mining and lime production in Mtwara

The extraction of live coral to burn and produce "white lime" or "chokaa" has a long history in Tanzania, yet in many areas it is believed that this practice has reached unsustainable levels and is considered to be one of the main contributors to reef and forest degradation along the coast. This assessment was developed to describe the size, geographic extent and socioeconomics of the coral mining and lime production industry within the buffer zone of Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park.

Guidelines for strategic adaptive management : experiences from managing the rivers of the Kruger National Park

This guidelines outlines one management tool, strategic adaptive management, that has been developed by the staff and managers of Kruger National Park. This approach recognises and is responsive to global change factors in a realistic and practical manner. The guideline aims to present an overview of strategic adaptive management practice, or SAM, as it has emerged within the specific context of Kruger National Park. The specific illustrative context that we use is that of rivers which have undergone enormous change.

Keep it fresh or salty : an introductory guide to financing wetland carbon programs and projects

Wetlands have been the focus of conservation and restoration efforts for over a century, and governments, international actors (NGOs and academia) and local communities around the world are now increasingly engaging in wetland restoration or avoiding wetland degration activities for climate change mitigation. Yet despite the rapidly growing attention on wetland activities for climate mitigation, finding the appropriate funding sources to set up a wetland carbon project or develop a national wetland carbon program is often a challenge.

Safe flyways for the Siberian Crane

Cranes, a flagship species of waterbirds, have great cultural significance - especially the Siberian Crane. Yet, even after decades of conservation efforts, cranes remain threatened with 11 species at risk. To help reverse these trends, the UNEP/GEF Siberian Crane Wetland Project  was the first project to its kind to take a "flyway" approach to conservation, looking to secure the ecological integrity of a network of 16 critical wetlands in Eurasia.
