The state of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa : second edition

This second edition of The state of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa builds on the first edition published in 2020 and provides updates on how the region is managing and governing protected and conserved areas, effectively providing a regional update on the progress towards the achievement of Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity framework.

Estado das Áreas Protegidas e de Conservação na África Oriental e Austral é o primeiro relatório que reúne informação sobre áreas1 protegidas e de conservação para toda a região da África Oriental e Austral. A região da África Oriental e Austral abrange 24 países desde a África do Sul no sul até ao Sudão no norte e quatro das seis nações das ilhas do Oceano Índico Ocidental. A região é culturalmente diversa e extremamente rica em biodiversidade, com uma abundância de vida selvagem espectacular, e muitas espécies endémicas de flora e fauna.

État des aires protégées et de conservation d’Afrique orientale et australe est le premier rapport regroupant des informations sur les aires protégées et de conservation dans l’ensemble de la région d’Afrique de l’Est et du Sud. La région d’Afrique orientale et australe couvre 24 pays, de l’Afrique du Sud, au sud, au Soudan, au nord, ainsi que quatre des six nations insulaires de l’océan Indien occidental.

State of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa

State of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa is the first report that brings together information on protected and conserved areas for the whole Eastern and Southern Africa region. The Eastern and Southern Africa region covers 24 countries from South Africa in the south to Sudan in the north and four of the six Western Indian Ocean island nations. The region is culturally diverse and extremely rich in biodiversity, with an abundance of spectacular wildlife, and many endemic species of flora and fauna.

Closing the gap : financing and resourcing of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa

This report aims to provide an overview of the current status of protected area finance in the Southern and Eastern African region, covering 24 countries, to understand the extent of the challenge. The report also outlines the different innovative finance mechanisms that might be used to help decrease the funding gap.

Natural World Heritage in Africa

This report provides a synthesis of key information on the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Africa, and some guidance on how it might contribute to global conservation efforts and sustainable development in the future.
