Alien species

The spread of invasive alien species (IAS) is creating complex and far-reaching challenges that threaten both the natural biological riches of the earth and the well being of its citizens. Summarising key findings of the Phase I Synthesis Conference held in September 2000 in Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, this publication presents ten strategic responses that address how to mitigate the threats of IAS.

While the issue of invasive alien species (IAS) has important biological components, the human dimensions deserve much greater attention. Humans, with all their diversity of quirks, strengths, and weaknesses, are at the heart of the problem of IAS and, paradoxically, also at the heart of the solution.

This guide seeks to help by providing national law and policy makers with practical information and guidance for developing of strengthening legal and institutional frameworks on alien invasive species, consistent with Article 8(h) of the CBD, as well as pertinent obligations under other international instruments. It provides a structured framework for dealing with alien invasive species issues and contains illustrations and practical examples to assist in understanding their impact

This regional session of the GBF brought together over 120 participants from 22 countries, ranging from indigenous comunity representatives to members of intergovernmental organisations. It was designed to feed directly into the deliberations of the CBD, in particular the discussion of SBSTTA (Jan-Feb 2000). Selected themes reflected key SBSTTA5 agenda items, and also highlighted regional concerns.

This report summarizes the discussions of the Workshop on Alien Invasive Species held in Montreal (CA) during the WCC October 13-23, 1996. This report is produced to foster implementation of multi-party objectives concerning management of alien invasive species globally. 

As excellent examples of oceanic island ecosystems, many unmodified by human influences, these islands are of great conservation significance but adequate protection varies. The papers in this volume examine the progress made by various national authorities since the first workshop in 1986 and set out a new call for action in 35 recommendations.
