The author commences with a general sketch of bird structure, purposely avoiding histological detail and the elaborate description of anatomical facts which are in the mind of the author not of great use in classification.

The present work on Scomber was begun in the laboratory of the author in 1892 by Dr. J. Dewitz and was continued with frequent interruptions until spring 1898. After that Mr. Jujiro Nomura continued this work.

The object of the writer of the present work has been twofold ; first, to lay before the Naturalist a complete view of the organization and physiological relations of every class of living beings ; and secondly, to offer to the Anatomical Student a succinct account of the structure and development of the vital organs through all modifications that they present in the long series of the animal creation.
