Capacity building

In 2007, IUCN, UNDP, UNEP and WEDO recognized the need for a coordinated strategy among global institutions working on gender and climate change. The result was the establishment of the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA). The primary goal of the GGCA is to ensure that climate change policies, decision making, and initiatives at the global, regional and national levels are gender-responsive.

Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) are important instruments for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Trade and travel are the primary drivers of biological invasion both into and within the United States, and prevention measures have been identified as the most cost-effective means of minimizing the introduction and impact of invasive species. A recognized gap in the US government’s knowledge of the role that trade has played in the introduction of invasive species into the US led to a study undertaken by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of International Affairs and IUCN.

This document summarizes Bangladesh’s existing capacity in addressing climate change, biodiversity and land degradation problems and concerns assessed through country-wide consultations. It includes an action plan developed to improve the country’s capacity in the public and private sectors and at individual, institutional and policy levels.

CEPA tools have been identified as one of the keys to achieving better outcomes in a broad range of environmental projects – increased community engagement, higher levels of collaboration among stakeholders, better targeted public awareness materials and increased sustainability of results.

This book describes the 12 years of Kibale and Semliki Conservation and Development Project, and how in the project’s early days conservation and development activities tended to be separate and discrete activities. With lesson learning the project gradually became more integrated in terms of linking livelihood activities such as tree planting, bee keeping, improved agricultural practice, with conservation interventions (protected area management, and problem animal management).
