Chimpanzees

In 2016, IUCN uplisted the western chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes verus, from “Endangered” to “Critically Endangered”, reflecting the subspecies’ increasingly dire conservation status. Of the four recognised chimpanzee subspecies, Pan troglodytes verus is under the greatest threat. The current plan presents the status and threats to P. t. verus, based on expert evaluation of the best scientific knowledge available to date.

En 2016, l’UICN a requalifié le statut de conservation du chimpanzé d’Afrique de l’Ouest, Pan troglodytes verus, qui est passé de la catégorie « en danger » à la catégorie « en danger critique d’extinction », reflétant ainsi la situation désastreuse de cette sous-espèce. Parmi les quatre sous-espèces reconnues de chimpanzés, Pan troglodytes verus est la plus menacée. Ce plan présente le statut de conservation de P. t. verus et les menaces sur cette sous-espèce, sur la base d’une évaluation par des experts des meilleures informations scientifiques disponibles.

Despite the dedicated efforts of many individuals and organizations, the great apes—our closest living relatives—are on the very edge of extinction. This sweeping atlas provides a comprehensive overview of what is currently known about all six species of great apes—chimpanzee, bonobo, Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, eastern gorilla, and western lowland gorilla.

The following action plan details a strategy for protecting 80% of the surviving chimpanzees in West Africa at a cost of US$9 million. The plan resulted from a recent workshop in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where an international group of 72 biologists, protected areas managers, government officials, and other experts met to discuss priority actions for protecting chimpanzees in West Africa.

Le gorille de plaine de l'Ouest Gorilla gorilla gorilla et le chimpanzé d'Afrique centrale Pan troglodytes troglodytes connaissent un déclin spectaculaire à cause du braconnage, des maladies et de la disparition de l'habitat dus à la demande de viande de brousse, une application insuffisante des lois, la corruption et une bien plus grande facilité d'accès à des habitats autrefois isolés.

Ce document est le fruit d'un consensus entre les agences de gestion forestière et de conservation de la faune au Nigeria et au Cameroun, des organisations non gouvernementales locales et internationales de conservation et des chercheurs affiliés à des universités, réunis lors d'ateliers organisés dans les deux pays pour formuler un ensemble d'actions, qui, si elle sont mises en place, pourraient amélior les chances de survie du chimpanzé du Nigeria-Cameroun. 

This document represents the consensus of views from forestry and wildlife conservation agencies in Nigeria and Cameroon, local and international nongovernmental conservation organizations, and university-based researchers who met at a series of workshops in Cameroon and Nigeria to formulate a set of actions that, if implemented, will increase the long-term survival prospects of the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee.
