Conservation education

In der Landschaft Mitteleuropas unterliegen fast alle Flächen einer regelmässigen Nutzung, Pflege oder Gestaltung durch den Menschen. Dies trifft auch für die meisten unter Naturschutz stehenden Areale zu, die dem Erhalt bestimmter Kulturlandschaftsformen dienen. Um wilde, ungelenkte Natur zu erleben, muss man Nationalparks aufsuchen, in denen sich Wildnis - in Mitteleuropa meist Sekundärwildnis - auf einigen Tausend Hektaren ausdehnen kann. In einem Nationalpark ist die Natur vor menschlichen Eingriffen geschützt und verändert sich ständig.

The current book presents and summarizes works and projects finalized during the second course of Klagenfurt University's postgraduate M.Sc programme on "Management in Protected Areas" (2007 to 2009). While the first volume in this proceedings series presented the focus on approaches for improving protected areas, the current volume develops the understanding of PA management further to emphasize the dynamic aspects of management in terms of innovative and new approaches and scientific results. 

Essays in this publication offer perspectives and strategies to promote both environmental conservation and poverty eradication. Reflecting a range of disciplines, issues, and settings, they cover four interrelated topics: the link between poverty reduction and the environment by encouraging integration of environmental management and development; environmental disasters, their impact on poor people, and the ways to prevent or mitigate their consequences; conservation knowledge and the role of information and education in sustainable development; and legal empowerment of the poor.
