The story of Guiana is one of colonisation under very great difficulties, of trading ventures, failures through ignorance, quarrels, wars, corsairs and labour experiments. It was a point of contention between European powers such as the English Dutch and French.

The Global Innovation Index (GII) is a ranking of innovation performance of around 130 countries produced by Cornell University, INSEAD, and WIPO. Over the last eleven years, and as countries increasingly use its results, the GII has established itself as a tool for action for decision makers.
