Forest degradation

REDD+ refers to the implementation of activities under the UNFCCC in developing tropical countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to promote the sustainable management of forests and the enhancement and conservation of forest carbon stocks.

Within a landscape of overlapping ecological, social and economic priorities, there exists a fundamental need to balance the land use dynamics of natural resource management with environmental and livelihood considerations. However, in striving to reach such a balance, people and local institutions are often excluded or forgotten.

This book provides an up-to-date picture of the health of the world’s tropical forests. Claude Martin, an eminent scientist and conservationist, integrates information from remote imaging, ecology, and economics to explain deforestation and forest health throughout the world. He explains how urbanization, an increasingly global economy, and a worldwide demand for biofuels put new pressure on rainforest land.

This document discusses the potential for designing pro-poor systems for the distribution of benefits derived from the reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) in the Yucatan Peninsula (comprised by the states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan), Mexico.

This book is concentrated on forest environmental issues from the perspective of reforestation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea using international and national experience and opportunities. The major idea of this book is to share some relevant information and available knowledge on the issue.
