Gorillas

Gorillas, the largest of the Great Apes, are the second closest relatives to humans after chimpanzees and bonobos and, while once regarded as ferocious beasts, are now considered by those who have studied them to be gentle giants. Because of its limited range, the Mountain Gorilla was the first to become the subject of considerable research study by field biologists and later by wildlife photographers and writers.

Despite the dedicated efforts of many individuals and organizations, the great apes—our closest living relatives—are on the very edge of extinction. This sweeping atlas provides a comprehensive overview of what is currently known about all six species of great apes—chimpanzee, bonobo, Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, eastern gorilla, and western lowland gorilla.

Here we report on the ninth iteration of the biennial listing of a consensus of the 25 primate species considered to be among the most endangered worldwide and the most in need of conservation measures. The 2016–2018 list of the world’s 25 most endangered primates has five species from Africa, six from Madagascar, nine from Asia, and five from the Neotropics.

The list includes 5 species from Africa, 6 from Madagascar, 9 from Asia, and 5 from the Neotropics. This publication includes comprehensive information about the threats facing these primates, with bibliographic references cited in the text.

The Cameroon-Nigeria border region where the Cross River gorilla occurs is a biodiversity hotspot of global significance. The Cross River gorilla can therefore play a role as a 'flagship' species; the actions proposed in this plan ensure the survival of both this Critically Endangered ape and the region's immense biological wealth. This document represents the consensus of experts who met at a workshop in February 2012, in Limbe, South West Region, Cameroon. 

This report summarises the findings of a study, conducted between 2001 and 2002, which aimed to test the effectiveness of these strategies in reconciling biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development interests, in particular through interventions that both improved livelihoods and resulted in increased support for biodiversity conservation, in terms of the attitudes and behaviours of local communities.
