Large marine ecosystems

This is the first book to provide assessments of multarget_idecadal changes in resources and environments of the Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) of the North Atlantic. Using the case study method, researchers examine the forces driving the changes and actions underway aimed at turning the corner from declining trends in biomass yields, toward recovery of depleted species populations and improvements in ecosystem integrity. This volume is drawn from a symposium sponsored by the World Conservation Union (IUCN); the Institute of Marine Science, Bergen, Norway; U.S.

This volume combines the latest research on the Gulf of Guinea from scientists working primarily in the region and from Europe. It covers the dynamics of the oceanic and coastal waters of the region, the major biological resources, pollution in the marine environment and the socio-economics and governance of marine fisheries. 

Sustaining the World’s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) provides examples of advances made in the operationalization of the five-module approach to ecosystem based management (EBM) for sustaining the goods and services of the world’s LMEs.

Recognizing the importance of promoting global efforts underway for sustainable development of the oceans, the Göteborg Award Selection Jury is pleased to distribute a special volume, Sustainable Development of the World’s Large Marine Ecosystems during Climate Change on the occasion of the presentation of the 2010 Göteborg Award.
