The Arabian Peninsula contains a wide diversity of sand and gravel deserts, mountains, coastal and offshore habitats and sparse wetlands. It also contains a diverse mammal fauna which comprises a mix of Arabian endemics, species with affinities to the Horn of Africa and Saharo-Sindian, Iranian-Central Asian, and Mediterranean elements.

This is the first national Red List assessment of the 85 mammalian species, reported from Jordan. The aim was to assess the national conservation status of the terrestrial mammals in Jordan. In 2016, IUCN uplisted the western chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes verus, from “Endangered” to “Critically Endangered”, reflecting the subspecies’ increasingly dire conservation status. Of the four recognised chimpanzee subspecies, Pan troglodytes verus is under the greatest threat.
