Migration

The threat of climate displacement looms large over a growing number of countries. Based on the more than six years of work by Displacement Solutions in ten climate-affected countries, academic work on displacement and climate adaptation, and the country-level efforts of civil society groups in several frontline countries, this report explores the key contention that land will be at the core of any major strategy aimed at preventing and resolving climate displacement.

Our living planet is and has always been on the move. Many species move in search of necessities such as food, water, shelter, reproduction, and safety. In some cases, movements are an adaptive response to environmental stresses and shocks; in other cases, environmental change, whether land degradation, climate change or other forms, may add to other drivers of migration.

Les conflits ont poussé les sociétés à leurs limites en termes de ressources financières et humaines. Des vies et des biens ont été perdus et perturbés, des moyens de subsistance détruits et des personnes déplacées.

Il est en histoire naturelle des problèmes dont l'attrait, plus vif que celui de beaucoup d'autres, ou plus sensible à des personnes plus nombreuses, éveilla de tout temps une attention constante et soutenue. Tel est celui des poissons migrateurs. Que sont ces voyageurs du monde aquatique, que l'on voit apparaitre par bancs et disparaitre à des époques fixes, se montrer un temps, puis partir sans retourner jusqu'à l'année d'après?

Conflict and conservation focuses on armed conflict and nature. The theme is highly timely as armed conflicts cause great economic and social harm, as well as environmental damage around the world. Conflicts have stretched societies to their limits in terms of financial and human resources. Lives and property have been lost and disrupted, livelihoods destroyed, and people displaced. Regrettably, policies to better manage and moderate pressures that drive armed conflicts have been unable to prevent their number from reaching what is now their highest level for 30 years.

Studies in Costa Rica and the Philippines analyze the underlying mechanisms that have led to resource degradation: land tenure policies, population growth, and narrow economic policies advanced during the debt crisis. In both countries migration patterns are also involved in the interaction between economic crisis, demographic change, legal institutions, and ecological problems. The linkages are multiple and complex. Both countries have seen a rapidly growing population migrating out of cities to easily degraded forest slopes due to poverty.

This book is a useful compendium of initiatives and projects demonstrating the benefits of sustainable land management for livelihoods, in particularly harsh environments.
