Mountains

Mountains are at the frontline of climate change, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and socio-economic inequities for both mountain communities and those downstream. However, mountain communities have the capacity to adapt to these changes and mitigate the impacts of climate change. By utilizing the opportunities created by ecosystem services, mountain communities can build climate-resilience, resource security and consistent livelihoods.

This book tells the story of one of Australia’s natural wonders, Kosciuszko National Park. A National Heritage–listed treasure, the park is the home of the mainland’s highest mountains, past glaciation sites, limestone caves, fields of summer wildflowers and alpine animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth.

Der Alpenreport schaut genauer hin. Wie steht es in diesem vielfältigen Natur- und Kulturraum um den Landschafts- und Naturschutz? Welche Bedeutung und Auswirkungen hat der Tourismus? Wie ist das Verkehrsaufkommen auf den Transitachsen? Auf diese und viele weitere Fragen antwortet diese erste gesamtalpine Übersicht mit konkreten Daten und Interpretationen. 

Der Übergang zur intensiven Landbewirtschaftung, die Nutzungsaufgabe von steilen und abgelegenen Flächen sowie die Ausdehnung des Siedlungsraums haben in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten in den Alpen einen beträchtlichen Verlust an Landschaftsqualität und an biologischer Vielfalt verursacht. Im Rahmen des Nationalen Forschungsprogramms NFP 48 "Landschaften und Lebensräume der Alpen" wurden diese Veränderungen eingehend untersucht.

The present paper was commissioned by the Australian Alps Liaison Committee. They believed that a detailed and comprehensive assessment was needed to determine if the Australian Alps are qualified for international recognition, and, if so, to determine at what level and for what reasons. The author's aim is to assess the arguments for international natural significance of the MOU area and to document this significance in an integrated fashion suitable as a basis for World Heritage nomination.
