As a typical coastal city, Xiamen, Fujian Province, China, faces serious societal challenges such as the impact of climate change, overexploitation of natural resources, and loss of biodiversity. Xiamen is implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) by strengthening ecological protection, promoting ecosystem restoration, building sponge city, supporting sustainable community development and green transformation of mines, while encouraging funding and diverse public participation.
With 26 case studies from 10 multinational companies, this publication highlights their positive actions, interventions and initiatives contributing to specific conservation and restoration goals.
The present book is devoted to dead wood, mainly in forests subjected to minimal management. Despite the focus of the book on sem-natural forests, dead wood is also necessary in managed forests and amounts generally found there ought to be increased. Dead wood and old, hollow trees are essential to a functioning forest ecosystem and necessary for the conservation of a myriad of species including some that are endangered.
The IUCN Urban Alliance, a broad coalition of IUCN constituents concerned with the urban dimensions of nature conservation, has unveiled a new knowledge product for measuring the ecological performance of cities: the IUCN Urban Nature Indexes (UNI).
