Wetlands, biodiversity and the Ramsar Convention : the role of the Convention on wetlands in the conservation and wise use of biodiversity

Understanding and managing the concerns of local people is essential for the success of most, if not all, conservation initiatives. These two volumes are a resource set designed to help professionals employed in conservation initiatives to identify the social concerns that are relevant for their work, assess options for action and implement them. The first volume is a companion to a process and may be used to assist in planning, evaluating or redesigning a conservation initiative.
The Begnas and Rupa lake watershed area, situated in the mid-hills of Nepal, is exceptionally rich in flora and fauna, and has significant tourist value. The ecology is critically threatened by increasing human intervention. This document responds to the current needs for the preservation of this watershed area, and includes 19 major conservation Action Plans.
Pokhara Valley is a major tourist centre in Nepal and houses 3 magnificent lakes : Phewa, Begnas and Rupa. This publication is a outcome of the National Conservation Strategy Implemenmtation Project and presents 23 conservation strategies and plans to address the environmental degradation of Phewa lake and its immediate watershed area.
This study makes use of extensive spatial datasets, not previously available, to provide for the first time a comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of biodiversity in the terrestrial tropics. The extent to which potential habitats and closed moist forests are represented in protected areas is assessed. Priorities for conservation action are identified on the basis of a country's relative importance for a given habitat and the extent to which it is protected.
