Protected areas

Le Mali possède un réseau composé de onze aires protégées et de six zones d’intérêt cynégétique qui couvrent ensemble 4,6% du territoire national. L’évaluaion a porté sur dix aires protégées: la réserve de Biosphère de Baoulé, la future réserve de Biosphère du Baffing Famélé, la réserve spéciale des éléphants du Gourma, les réserves du Soudan et du Baffing Baoulé, le Niénendougou, la réserve spéciale d’Asongo Ménaka, la réserve de Tamesna en cours de création et la ZIC de Tidermène Alata.

Les aires protégées de Côte d’Ivoire sont soumises à de fortes pressions, susceptibles de remettre en cause leur avenir. Les principales pressions identifiées sont le braconnage, l’exploitation agricole, l’exploitation forestière, la pêche, le prélèvement des produits forestiers non ligneux et ligneux secondaires, les feux de brousse incontrôlés. De plus les aires protégées ne sont pas soutenues par les communautés locales.

La Mauritanie abrite un réseau d’aires protégées relativement complet et représentatif en ce qui concerne les écosystèmes marins. En revanche, il pourrait être complété par les parties terrestres. Les principales pressions identifiées dans les parcs sont la transformation du milieu, l’exploitation minière, la surexploitation des ressources terrestres et des ressources marines, la pollution et le développement de certaines infrastructures.

Ce document présente les résultats de l'évaluation du système des parcs de Guinée Bissau, en particulier les parcs d'Orango, de Jao Viera et Pailào, de cafuda, de Cacheu et l'aire protégée en création à Cantanhez. La méthodologie employée est celle développée par le WWF : méthode d'évaluation rapide et établissement des priorités de gestion des aires protégées (RAPPAM).

Protected areas have proven themselves to be an effective tool for the conservation of biodiversity in situ. However, conserving biodiversity, even in protected areas, is a challenging assignment for most countries around the world where governments and local communities are often in competition for access to and use of resources. On top of these challenges, the world is facing changes in climate and sea level, increasing numbers of invasive species, and fragmentation of forests.

This new series of publications on the values of Protected Landscapes and Seascapes is intended to document and spell out the various environmental, economic, social and cultural values that Category V protected areas can provide. The first volume addresses the topic of agrobiodiversity. Since they are lived-in, working landscapes, Category V protected areas would appear to provide a potential mechanism for conserving agrobiodiversity.

The Delos Initiative focuses on the sacred natural sites in developed countries throughout the world (such as Australia, Canada, the European countries, Japan, New Zealand and the United States of America). Its main purpose is to help in maintaining both the sanctity and the biodiversity of these sites, through the understanding of the complex relationship between spiritual/cultural and natural values.

Bringing together the diverse experiences of park agencies and managers, conservation NGOs and international agencies, this book examines the role of tourism in protected area management. Using case studies from around the world it provides examples of successful partnerships between community, public and private sectors. It also explores how tourism can be used as a management tool for financing protected areas.
