Rehabilitation

This report presents the main findings and recommendations of the IUCN-Niger Delta Panel, regarding the sustainable remediation and rehabilitation of oil spill impacted sites in the Niger Delta. It has been prepared for the Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd of Nigeria (SPDC) and represents the Panel’s first year of work. It therefore focuses on the first two of the four objectives set out for the Panel, namely to ‘develop and provide standards and best practice guidance on remediation and rehabilitation’ and ‘encourage uptake of the guidance by SPDC and others’.

Building on the experience of Holcim Lebanon in rehabilitating one of its degraded quarries after excavation activities, this report will provide guidelines for rehabilitation practices in Lebanon and the Mediterranean. It will suggest milestones towards a successful rehabilitation process and discuss the challenges and constraints facing restoration initiatives while highlighting the main elements and lessons learned for future rehabilitation attempts in limestone quarries. 

Rehabilitation and translocation programmes are increasingly becoming an important component of conservation action plans for threatened species. Translocation can help address gibbon conservation issues (gibbons are recognized as one of the most threatened primate families globally) by allowing gibbons held in captivity to be rescued, rehabilitated and then returned to the wild. These guidelines for the translocation of gibbons have been developed in collaboration with stakeholders in hylobatarget_id conservation.
