Flussauen spielen für den Erhalt der biologischen Vielfalt, den naturverträglichen Hochwasserschutz und die Anpassungen an den Klimawandel eine wichtige Rolle. Trotz der bedeutenden Funktionen von Auen im Naturhaushalt war über ihre räumliche Ausdehnung und ihren Zustand im bundesweiten Überblick bislang wenig bekannt. Diese Wissenslücke wurde durch die Erfassung und Bewertung der Auen von 79 Flüssen auf einer Länge von ca. 10.000 Flusskilometern mit einer Gesamtfläche von ca.
