In the present edition very great pains have been taken to render the book more worthy of the public notice. At least one third more matter has been introduced, and between thirty and forty new illustrations will be found in its pages.

Dans cette étude générale de la faune de la France l'auteur cherche à vulgariser la connaissance des animaux lui entourent, à donner scientifiquement et vulgairement la liste de toutes les espèces de la France continentale, avec son littoral, y compris la Corse et l'Alsace-Lorraine provisoirement séparées ; puis aussi, à faire connaitre pratiquement en quoi ses animaux sont utiles ou nuisibles.

The goal of this book is to introduce the world of zoology. To understand zoology it is necessary to understand two points. Firstly, what is meant by life and living things and secondly, how an animal is to be distinguished from a plant.

The decline of many species towards extinction has largely focused conservation efforts on ensuring that species remain extant. However, conservationists have long recognised the need to complement this by aiming to recover depleted populations throughout a species’ range and to restore species to ecosystems from which they have been extirpated.

Competence frameworks are widely used in many professional sectors, helping to develop capacity by defining and recognising the required skills, knowledge and personal attributes.

The passing of the IUCN Resolution 041 (Development of objective criteria for a Green List of species, ecosystems and protected areas) at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju Island, South Korea in September 2012 provided an important indication of government and NGO support for the principle of the Green Status of Species. However, there was no indication of what the GSS method would look like. Since then, those details have been worked out by technical specialists.

This is the first national Red List assessment of the 85 mammalian species, reported from Jordan. The aim was to assess the national conservation status of the terrestrial mammals in Jordan. The information provided in this report will help to put local conservation priorities into a national context, thus maximizing the effectiveness of conservation measures, and facilitating the development of integrated national conservation strategies.
