Zoological gardens

The Zoological Park: a new ally for Biodiversity delivers directly and succinctly what must be understood as the requirements of the EU Zoos Directive established in 1999. In the simplest possible language and with the most useful information it explains how zoological parks should conduct their activities. It is a handbook incorporating guidelines, studies, research and recommendations of European and international scope, gathering the doctrine and current approaches to resolving any imprecision or indeterminacy of the regulations to be complied with.

Zoologische und Botanische Gärten sowie Freilichtmuseen sind beliebte Freizeiteinrichtungen mit einem sehr breiten Besucherspektrum. Sie bieten durch ihre Bezüge zu faszinierenden und häufig regional bis weltweit bedrohten Pflanzen- und Tierarten vielfältige Möglichkeiten, ihre Besucherinnen und Besucher anzusprechen, über Hintergründe zu informieren und für bisher unbekannte Zusammenhänge zu begeistern.

Außerschulischen Lernorten kommt für die Ausgestaltung der zweiten Halbzeit der UN-Dekade „Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ (2005-2014) (BNE) sowie für die Umsetzung der „Nationalen Strategie zur biologischen Vielfalt“ eine große Bedeutung zu. Die Voraussetzungen sind gut: Die Bandbreite dieser Einrichtungen ist vielfältig, sie geht von Natur- und Umweltzentren über Lern-Bauernhöfe, Science-Center, Botanische und Zoologische Gärten, Freilichtmuseen bis hin zu Wildparks und vielen anderen Ausprägungen.

Modern zoos and aquariums are playing an increasingly active and important role in conserving species in their natural habitat. This richly illustrated book provides an overview of the partners, approaches and achievements of the world zoo and aquarium community in wildlife conservation. The book's main focus is on 25 conservation success stories from around the globe, portraying the many ways in which zoos and aquariums are committed to biodiversity conservation.
