Zoologische und Botanische Gärten sowie Freilichtmuseen sind beliebte Freizeiteinrichtungen mit einem sehr breiten Besucherspektrum. Sie bieten durch ihre Bezüge zu faszinierenden und häufig regional bis weltweit bedrohten Pflanzen- und Tierarten vielfältige Möglichkeiten, ihre Besucherinnen und Besucher anzusprechen, über Hintergründe zu informieren und für bisher unbekannte Zusammenhänge zu begeistern.

Außerschulischen Lernorten kommt für die Ausgestaltung der zweiten Halbzeit der UN-Dekade „Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ (2005-2014) (BNE) sowie für die Umsetzung der „Nationalen Strategie zur biologischen Vielfalt“ eine große Bedeutung zu.
